Clean Up In Aisle 3

How many times in our lifetimes have we heard the overhead speakers belch “clean-up in aisle 3”? So often that we might all stores were not making use of a voice-over tape of pre-recorded messages to use at the appropriate times. It is one of those things that when we hear it, we know exactly why we heard it. There is a mess somewhere that needs to get cleaned up.

I have heard God telling me many times and in several different ways over the years that there is a clean-up needed in aisle 3 of my heart. Have you ever heard that call?

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, [a] the world and those who dwell therein, (2) for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (3) Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? (4) He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. (5) He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Psalm 24:1-5 (ESV)

I want to ascend that hill. I want to stand in His holy place. I want to receive blessing from the Lord. All of that for some clean-up in aisle 3 of my heart. What a deal! What about you?

Here’s a Better Deal

Here is a better deal. We do not have to do the clean-up work alone. All we need to do is be willing and available for the clean-up. And ask for it. And pray for it. And have faith that it will happen. Now, is it all that hard I ask? I can easily (though sometimes begrudgingly) do those five things without breaking a sweat, but all too often I do not. You see, the clean-up in aisle 3 is actually done by the same One who holds that blessing for us, the one who stands there in His holy place.

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleanliness, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Ezekiel 36:25-27 (ESV)

A prayer: Lord, I hear your call for a clean-up in aisle three of my heart many times. You always bless me when I respond to that call and offer myself up to you to tell me what needs changing, and then you wait patiently as I work through that which needs changing with your guiding hand. Your water cleanses me Father, and I am so grateful that you continue to work on my heart.
